In 2008, at Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz, I created large-scale multimedia projections for the fairy-tale opera Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck (libretto: Adelheid Wette,
The production blended a 19th-century fairy tale with a modern theatrical language. My projections extended across large screens and side walls of the stage, introducing animated fairy-tale imagery: the Witch’s terrifying eye, witches flying to their sabbath, falling gingerbread, fire, and elemental forces. In some scenes, children’s portraits appeared as projections, becoming part of the onstage world.
Critics emphasized that the “visual and plastic dimension of the spectacle was truly breathtaking”, creating “a magical, colorful, and spiritual world that the Brothers Grimm themselves could never have imagined.” The use of multimedia was praised as “imaginative and balanced, free from pseudo-modern excess,” enhancing the fairy-tale atmosphere while remaining deeply connected to the music.
Directed by Cezary Domagała, with set design by Małgorzata Szydłowska, choreography by Marek Zajączkowski, lighting design by Bogumił Palewicz, and musical direction by Jerzy Wołosiuk, multimedia by Dawid Kozłowski.
