Blind Chance by Krzysztof Kieślowski (Przypadek według Krzysztofa Kieślowskiego) is a stage adaptation inspired by Krzysztof Kieślowski’s film Blind Chance (1981), developed at Teatr Łaźnia Nowa in Kraków.
The production explores the concept of contingency and the multiplicity of possible life trajectories shaped by accidental events and political circumstances. The narrative structure reflects Kieślowski’s original idea of parallel life paths, emphasizing how a single moment can redirect an individual’s existence toward radically different outcomes.
A key element of the performance is the use of large-scale video projections integrated directly into the scenographic environment. The scenography, designed by Małgorzata Szydłowska, functions as a dynamic visual field in which live action, architecture, and moving image overlap. Video materials are projected onto sculptural stage surfaces, transforming the space into a shifting cinematic composition rather than a fixed theatrical set. The multimedia layer does not operate as illustration but as an active dramaturgical force, fragmenting perspective and reinforcing the instability of narrative choice. This creates an immersive environment where theatre and cinema merge into a single audiovisual structure.
The production situates Kieślowski’s philosophical reflection on chance within a contemporary performative language, using video, light, and scenography to construct a layered experience of reality, memory, and possibility.
