Dawid Kozlowski - Afternoon of a Faun

Afternoon of a Faun directed and choreographed by Dominika Knapik, was a contemporary dance performance reinterpreting the mythology of Nijinsky’s L’Après-midi d’un faune through a surreal, contemporary setting of a garden store. The production combined dance, live music, theatre, and multimedia within an immersive spatial arrangement in which the audience was seated directly on the stage alongside the performers. A large-format projection screen enclosed the playing space, separating it from the theatre auditorium, while musicians performing the score live were positioned among rows of plants and garden-store elements integrated into the scenography.

Created in collaboration with dramaturg Łukasz Wojtysko, composers Daniel Szwed and Łukasz Jędrzejczak, and scenographer Karolina Mazur, the performance explored themes of instinct, desire, fantasy, and artificial nature through a fragmented, sensory theatrical language.

My multimedia design combined projected imagery inspired both by the visual environment of the garden store and by the original scenography created by Léon Bakst for the first historic staging of Afternoon of a Faun (1912). Large-scale projections functioned as an atmospheric and spatial extension of the choreography, merging ornamental references, organic textures, and mediated landscapes into a continuously transforming visual environment. The multimedia layer shaped the perception of the enclosed stage space, creating a hybrid world suspended between contemporary artificiality and mythological dream imagery.
